Fake social media profiles are everywhere, and scammers are getting better at impersonating people you know. If a “friend” suddenly messages you asking for money, gift cards, or urgent help, pause before responding.

Scammers often hack accounts or create look-alike profiles to trick victims into sending money.

Watch out for:

  • Messages that feel out of character.

  • Requests to keep the situation secret.

Before sending money, verify the request by contacting your friend through another method, like a phone call or text. When in doubt, don’t send money.
